Students organise raceday at Newbury

Equine Management students from the Royal Agricultural College are organising a charity race day at Newbury Racecourse, with stars from the equestrian world giving displays.

The raceday, on Saturday 2rd March 2013, is dedicated to raising funds for the fantastic work of Greatwood, a recognised racehorse welfare charity. The charity provides a future for former racehorses, as well as children and young people with special educational needs, through interactions in unique programmes of rehabilitation and education.

The RAU students, who are all studying on the BSc course, have been gaining first-hand experience of event management by organising displays to take place before the races start, and liaising with affiliated bodies.

The equestrian themed displays will take place prior to racing and will feature a demonstration with event rider Laura Collett and the recently retired dual Gold Cup winner Kauto Star in his first public appearance before changing discipline.  Laura will also be performing a jumping master class on her Badminton horse with Yogi Breisner, World Class Performance Manager and Chef d’Equipe to the British Eventing team. There will also be an exclusive appearance from Deborah Criddle, Paralympic Gold and Silver Medallist in Dressage.

The race day will be an ideal experience for first time race goers, families and students, as well as those who already have a keen interest in racing. Visitors can enjoy an interactive riding zone with pony rides and racegoers can even try their hand at being a jockey on the British Racing School mechanical racehorse!

Gates open at 11.30 am with the first race at 2pm. For more information, details of discounted student tickets and event updates visit the Newbury Racecourse website.
